Mike Cronin Sizzles!

Round 4 of the Redline Track Events 2011 Season was held July 2-3 at Willow Springs Raceway in Rosamond California. Typical desert weather prevailed, with daytime temps upwards of 105 degrees the entire weekend. Pavement temps hovered around the 160 degree mark, making the newly resealed track surface slick and greasy.

Good thing Mike and the 350Z were in peak form! Cort Wagner, the consummate pro, ignored the heat and drove the GTR flawlessly all weekend.

Redline had a fun day planned for Saturday, complete with drag races and a fantastic Fireworks Show! Mr. Cronin and Mike both took advantage of the opportunity to beat up on each other drag racing the Firebird and Ferrari 458!

Age wins before beauty every time. Mr. Cronin now has bragging rights in the Ferrari over Mike Jr in the 1000 ft. drags!

Unfortunately, Scott VanderHeide in the Sentra had a turbo seal failure in the MotoIQ Pacific Tuner Car Championship Liberty Grand Prix, run in the relative cool of the evening before the Fireworks Show. Aaron Singh also had a mechanical failure taking him out of the Pro Time Attack competition.

Mike Cronin put down a blistering qualifying lap of 1:22.45 to take the pole position. Cort came in a strong 4th, with a 1:23.951 in the heat. The Super Session start was marred by an incident between Joey Scarallo and Lou Gigliotti in turn one, ending the day for both competitors.

The restart followed, with both Fontana Nissan Racing entries on the front row. Mike was able to bring home the win, followed closely by Cort and Paul Brown. The brackets are set!

Mike’s first battle was against the new competitor Fred Poordad in his Porsche GT3 cup car. Mike was able to move on, sending Fred to the loosers bracket. Meanwhile Cort was pitted against the tough Paul Brown and came up just short.

Cort would next face Poordad but the excessive heat played havoc with the GTR’s street car electronics, sending it into limp home mode. Hard to race in limp home mode. Cort would finish the event in 4th place.

Mike would face Paul Brown in the K&N Filters car for the win. By now, both cars and both drivers were heat soaked to the max, but Mike was able to keep the 350Z out in front and take the win!

Fortunately, the champagne was ice cold! Congratulations to all the competitors and crews for surviving a very challenging weekend!

Round 3 Auto Club Speeeeeeedway!

Fontana Nissan Racing made the couple mile trek to our home track, Auto Club Speedway to compete in Round 3 of the Redline Track Events Season!

Notice anything different? The GT-R has gone from stealth black to sporting the identical livery of the 350Z! Thanks to Michael and the boys at All Digital Ink the GT-R was transformed into the twin of the 350Z in record time.

With Mike Cronin at the wheel, the Z was looking fast during all practice sessions Saturday.

The new Team Look!

Before qualifying Mike Cronin experienced a problem with the fuel pump, resulting in no qualifying time. He was relegated to the back of the pack for the Super Session Race which sets the upcoming Battles.

Cort Wagner was able to qualify a strong 4th place with a blistering time of 1:41.702!

The Super Session got off to a great start, with Mike clawing his way toward the front and Cort holding onto 4th. Mike and Paul Brown had an epic battle with Mike just beating Paul to the finish line to secure 2nd place!

Unfortunately, just as the first Battle started, the electrons in the 350Z went on strike and Mike was done for the day. Cort first battled Joey Scarallo and was dispatched to the Consolation bracket by the GTO.

After a bye against the broken Mini Cooper of Dez Ballard, Cort was set to battle the improving Lars Wolf in the next bracket.

The two seesawed back and forth, to the delight of the crowd! Lars was able to just take Cort at the line, moving on and sending Cort to the sidelines.

Fontana Nissan Racing now sits 2nd and 4th in the Championship Points Standing for the Pro Track Challenge. Next up, Willow Springs Raceway and the track Mike has a zillion miles on!

Also new this race was the debut of Scott VanderHeide running MotoIQ PTCC in his Nissan Race Shop.com Sentra and Kerryann De La Cruz in her R35 GTR competing in the Pro Time Attack Modified Class.

Unfortunately Scott experienced fuel starvation all weekend and chalked this one up to “Getting it Sorted Out” !

Kerryann’s debut was also a shake down and she is getting a few items sorted as well. She finished 1st in the Modified AWD class!

Aaron Singh ran very well in his Nissan, taking 1st place in the hotly contested Modified RWD class! Congratulations to him!

Circuit Battles Airs Saturday April 30!

Doing it in the desert!

Fontana Nissan Racing took to Interstate 10, heading for Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix and Round 2 of the Pro Track Challenge.

Saturday dawned wet, cold, rainy, cold, windy, miserable, and just plain yucky. Oh well, make another pot of coffee and try to stay warm. Neither car ventured out on a very slippery track.

Never bet a kid that he can’t fit into a tire. You will lose.

Sunday’s weather was the complete opposite of Saturday. Yea!!! Sunny, warm and beautiful, just like the desert should be!

Both Mike Cronin in the 350Z and Cort Wagner in the GTR were eager to make up for lost time, and entered the track for the first time all weekend.

First up after a quick practice session was the qualifying session, with all cars trying to lay down their quickest laps to get a good spot in the Super Session race later in the day.

The 350Z was running great, thanks to some last minute tweaks by Naoto, the Sakata Motorsports guru. Mike was able to take the top qualifying position with a blistering lap of 1:01.206!

Cort was very quick in the GTR, following closely behind Mike with a qualifying lap of 1:02.151 for 3rd.

After qualifying the crew set about getting the cars ready for the Super Session, a 5 lap wheel to wheel race that would set the brackets for the Circuit Battles.

The drivers were kept busy with interviews by Samantha Schacher, the pit reporter for the Circuit Battles TV show. Mike was able to meet the legendary Tarzan Yamada, racing for the first time Pro Track Challenge!

The drivers discussed performance issues with Naoto and endlessly watched themselves drive around the track. Again. And again.

After working out any issues with the cars, they bench raced. Again.

Next up, the Super Session start, with Mike and Lou Gigliotti on the front row.

With Lou out front, the 350Z, GTR, and Paul Brown in the K&N Infinity were battling all the way to the checkered flag.

Gigliotti won, followed closely by Mike, then Cort in the GTR. The bracket races would be set by this finishing order. First up for FNR was Cronin vs. Tsaran and Wagner vs. Wolfe. (Scroll down to the previous post for the complete write up on each bracket.) Each race is a green, white, checker race, with the winner moving on and the loser either going home or to the loser’s bracket.

Both FNR cars were victorious, setting up the first FNR on FNR battle!

Mike was the winner, setting up a battle with Lou Gigliotti, and Cort went to the loser’s bracket to battle Paul Brown.

Mike lost by a hair, and Cort won, setting up a second round of FNR vs. FNR. Mike once again bested Cort to win a place in the final winner-take-all battle!

Talk about exciting! This photo says it all. The battle was intense! In the end, Lou Gigliotti took the win in Round 2 and Mike settled for a fantastic 2nd place finish!

Circuit Battles Firebird Recap!

The 2nd round of the Pro Track Challenge Series is now in the books! As anticipated, the short 1.6-mile road course at Firebird International Raceway provided intense racing action. With perfect weather on Sunday, all nine of the events competitors we’re anxious to hit the track.

Sunday’s action started off with Qualifying. With only one relatively dry session on Saturday afternoon, the teams had very little time to prepare their cars for this circuit. Lou Gigliotti in the #28 LG Motorsports Corvette snagged P1 early in the session on only his 9^th lap, at 1:01.234. However, P1 would eventually fall to Mike Cronin Jr. in the #29 Fontana Nissan 350z, who set a time of 1:01.206 on his 15^th lap.

Both Joey Scarallo and Dez Ballard had experience mechanical issues earlier in the event, and opted to sit out Qualifying. Paul Brown missed the Qualifying session as he was busy competing in the Redline Pro Time Attack competition, pulling double duty for the second event in a row.

This set the stage for the 5-lap Super Session seeding-race. Gigliotti was able to take the lead from Cronin Jr. on lap one of the race, however the race had to be black-flagged shortly after the completion of the first lap, due to an engine fire in Joey Scarallo’s #06 GTO. Thankfully Joey was unharmed in the incident; however, he was forced to retire from the event.

With one lap completed, race stewards opted to complete the four remaining laps. Gigliotti was able to jump into the lead at the drop of the green flag, with Cronin Jr and Cort Wagner close behind. The big mover in the race was Paul Brown in the #32 K&N sponsored G35. After starting in the 8^th position, Brown gradually clawed his way all the way up to 4^th while nearly setting the fastest lap of the race in the process. The final results of the Super Session filled the double-elimination bracket as follows:

In the first round of the Championship Bracket, Gigliotti, the #1 seed, would advance past Ballard. Paul Brown, seeded 4^th, advanced past Tarzan Yamada. Cort Wagner handled Lars Wolfe to advance. The only drama in the opening round played out in the battle of Mike Cronin Jr. and Andrei Tsaran. Andrei was able to take the lead from Mike on the first lap with a very aggressive move. Andrei did the same thing to Gary Sheehan at Willow Springs as well. However, the upset was not meant to be, with Cronin Jr. taking the lead back from Tsaran down the long front straight.

The first round of the Losers Bracket would see Ballard Vs. Yamada and Wolfe Vs. Tsaran. Yamada, as the higher seed, would have his choice of position. We’re not sure if it was a mistake or simple confusion, as Yamada yielded the inside position to Ballard. This would allow Ballard a clean shot into Turn 1, where he was able to take the lead on Lap #1. Yamada was never able to make a serious challenge for the lead, as the superior power/weight ratio of the Tech Division MINI, allowed Ballard to pull out a considerable lead down the front straight. The surprising victory for Ballard would have him advance to face the loser of the Wagner/Cronin Jr. battle.

In a rematch from Willow Springs, Tsaran Vs. Wolfe played out much the same. Tsaran snagged the lead from Wolfe at the drop of the green flag and never relinquished. This set up a battle between Tsaran and the loser of the Gigliotti/Brown battle.

Back in the Winners Bracket Semi Finals, the battles would be Gigliotti Vs. Brown and Wagner Vs. Cronin. In the first Semi-Final matchup, Gigliotti held off Brown into T1, maintaining his position through the back half of the track. Brown made an aggressive move out of the last corner, closing the lead to half a car length at the line, for the start of lap 2. Brown simply could not make a pass stick on the second lap. One final attempt out of Turn 12 simply couldn’t make it happen. Brown would be knocked down to the losers bracket to do battle with Andrew Tsaran in the THMotorsports Subaru. Gigliotti would move on to battle in the Championship Finals with the winner of the Wagner/Cronin Jr. battle.

Winners Bracket Semi Final number 2 would be a re-match of cars from Willow Springs, however, this time it was Mike Cronin Jr. behind the wheel of the Fontana Nissan 350z. Wagner beat Cronin Jr. to the entrance of Turn 1 with a very aggressive move, and was able to hold the #29 Fontana Nissan off through the back half of the circuit. Cronin Jr. was finally able to get around Wagner with an equally impressive move into T1 on the second lap. Coming out of the last corner, Wagner attempted to use his superior power, but it simply wasn’t enough. Cronin would move on to see Gigliotti in the Championship Finals, with Wagner moving down to the loser’s bracket to battle with Dez Ballard.

Cort Wagner was given only a few minutes of preparation time following his loss to Cronin Jr, before he had to battle with Ballard in the Tech Division MINI. Wagner simply had too much for Ballard right at the drop of the green, and stormed to a relatively easy victory.

Next up would be Andrei Tsaran in the #46 THMotorsports Subaru and Paul Brown in the #32 K&N Filters G35. Living up to his reputation for aggressive moves into Turn 1, Tsaran was able to take the lead through T1 and hold the lead the entirety of the first lap. Brown took advantage of his superior power to pass Tsaran on the front straight. It then appeared as though Tsaran experienced mechanical difficulties exiting Turn 2, dropping him back. Brown would move on to the Losers Bracket Semi-Finals, with Tsaran eliminated from the competition.

The Winners Bracket Finals saw the #1 Seed, Gigliotti, battle with the #2 seed, Cronin Jr. The LG Motorsports Corvette and Fontana Nissan 350z were very equally prepped, having been within one tenth of a second in qualifying. Gigliotti took the lead into T1, maintaining for the first lap. Cronin Jr. pressured right on the bumper exiting T12, but just could not get a good run on the #28 Corvette. Gigliotti held the lead again into T1, with Cronin Jr. never really having a great opportunity to force a pass on the back side of the track. Opting for a wide line through T12, and more momentum onto the front straight, Cronin took to the OUTSIDE of the exit, inches from the wall! Taking the lead for a split second, before the grunt of the Corvette’s V8 engine came to life. At the line it was almost too close to call, with Gigliotti just edging out the victory by only 8/100ths of a second!

In the loser’s bracket semifinals, Paul Brown would battle with Cort Wagner. It would be Infiniti Vs. Nissan! Wagner took the lead at the green, and was never seriously challenged over the two laps. Wagner held on for the victory and the right to battle in the loser’s bracket finals.

Yet again, Wagner would have very little rest between rounds, having to quickly face Mike Cronin Jr. in a rematch from the winner’s bracket semifinals. Once again, Wagner moved aggressively into Turn 1, taking the lead away from Cronin Jr. Both cars were tight through the entire first lap, with Wagner leading as they crossed the line for the white flag. Cronin dove to the inside of T1 on lap two for the lead and made it stick. Wagner pressured very closely for the tight sections of T3 through T8. Wagner ran the car wide through 11 and 12 in an attempt to increase his momentum coming onto the straight, and it nearly worked! Wagner would almost catch Cronin Jr. before the line, losing by only 5/100ths of a second!

In the Championship Finals, Cronin Jr would face Gigliotti once again. It would take two victories for Cronin to secure the event championship, as Gigliotti was undefeated heading into this battle. Gigliotti once again grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag, and made it stick through the back half of the track. Having learned his lesson from the first battle, Gigliotti took the wide exit out of T12, effectively blocking Cronin Jr. from using the same attempt at a wide pass. Gigliotti increased his lead down the long 5/8ths of a mile front straight, and maintained his lead through the technical section. Cronin Jr. was never able to make a serious attempt at a pass before the final two corners. With one last attempt to get a run on Gigliotti out of T12, Cronin took the tighter exit, but just didn’t have enough, giving Gigliotti the event victory!

We want to congratulate all of our competitors on another fantastic event! The Pro Track Challenge is living up to the hype of extremely entertaining and very close racing! The series will now move to the high speed banks of Auto Club Speedway. The teams have 6 weeks to prep their cars and bring more to fight to their next Circuit Battle! Circuit Battles TV Show Postponed

Circuit Battles Airing Temporarily Postponed

“The debut of the highly anticipated television program Circuit Battles, originally scheduled to air this Saturday, March 26^thon VERSUS, has been temporarily postponed.

Circuit Battles Producer, Wes Miller: “Put simply, more time is needed to polish this first episode, utilizing the vast resources made available to us by Redline Track Events.”

President and Co-Founder of Redline Track Events, Nikolas Malechikos: “You only have one opportunity to make a great first impression. This extra time will allow us to turn a good episode into a fantastic episode.”

The debut episode of Circuit Battles will air on a date to be announced shortly. “

Circuit Battles TV Show Here We Come!

March 5-6, Fontana Nissan Racing entered both cars, the 350Z and the GTR in the new Redline Track Events series Pro Track Challenge. Each round of competition is being filmed for the new TV show Circuit Battles, to air on the VERSUS channel!!

The first episode will air Saturday, March 26 at 11:00 am Pacific Daylight Time. Set your dvr’s and don’t miss it. Episode 1 will be one hour, with the following episodes being 30 minutes in length. VERSUS is channel 603 on Direct TV, check your listings for channel info for your cable or satellite provider.

Both cars were set and ready to race but one thing was terribly wrong. Our driver, Mike Cronin Jr. had hurt his back and was out of commission. What? How could this be? Weighlifting accident was the rumor. Only one thing to do, call in the replacements!

Gary Sheehan was called upon to pilot the 350Z in the new format of the Pro Track Challenge. Heads up elimination rounds, with a green-white-checker format. As they say, a winner every 4 minutes!! Gary had the crew make a few adjustments to suit his style and comfort level in the Z. After several practice sessions on Saturday, Gary was ready to take on the field.

The very well known and experienced sports car racer Cort Wagner got the call to drive the Fontana Nissan GTR. Always the pro, Cort stepped in and had the GTR dialed in and ready to go. Now all that remained was to take on the competition, including his teammate Gary, on Sunday!

The Pro Track Challenge starts with a qualifying session Sunday morning to set the field for the Seeding Race. The results of the Seeding Race determine the makeup of the double elimination rounds of heads-up battles.

Gary Sheehan finished 2nd in the Seeding Race, with Cort Wagner following in 3rd. The Rounds were now set, with Gary to take on Andrei Tsaran in the first round and Cort to battle Lars Wolfe.

Sheehan and Wagner both won their first rounds, putting them up against each other in the winners bracket.

Sheehan won, pitting him against the fast car of Joey Scarallo. Scarallo won, sending Sheehan to the loosers bracket. Meanwhile, Wagner was battling and bested Paul Brown, sending Sheehan and Wagner battling each other again. Once again, Sheehan came out on top. Down to the finals now, Sheehan was pitted against the winner of the winners bracket, Scarallo. Sheehan would have to beat Scarallo twice to win due to the double elimination format. Gary gave it his all but fell just short.

The record crowds attending the race were on their feet! The racing was exciting and constant. One battle would be finishing up while the next was already sent out on the track. Circuit Battles pit reporter Samantha Schacher interviewed each driver multiple times and was a great sport on the podium, taking a champagne shower in front of everyone!

Gary Sheehan took 2nd overall, with Cort taking 3rd!! A great outing for Fontana Nissan Racing and the new Pro Track Challenge Series!

Fontana Nissan Racing Goes Nismolistic!!

Fontana Nissan Racing rolled down to Fullerton Sunday to display our race cars and do the “meet and greet” with about a million really nice Nissan owners!

The forecast for rain fortunately proven wrong wrong wrong. It was a spectacular day!

Just a small part of the total group! Nissans of all types, shapes, sizes, conditions, etc were front and center.

The 350Z proved to be a very popular car. Eric Meade was on hand to provide knowledgeable answers to any and all questions.

Talena’s cube “Lowsugr” was popular with the crowd and won “Best Cube” in the show! Scott Venderheide from the Nissan Race Shop was busy making recommendations for additional parts she will be needing!

Old School Rules!

You could not ask for nicer convertible weather!

Roughly translated this means “My baby will grow up to drive a Nissan!”

Thanks to all the Nissan owners who came out, to the Sigma Nu frat boys, and Team Gouki for a very entertaining day! See you next year!

Redline Time Attack Finale at Auto Club

Yea! The Fontana Nissan Racing team was back in action with both the Nissan 350Z and the GTR at the season finale of the Redline Time Attack Series.

The 350Z was sporting a new engine after suffering a failure at the Willow Springs event in July. Look for a new chapter in the Technical Corner detailing the changes made in the new engine.

Naoto, our engine management guru from Sakata Motorsport Electronics was on hand all weekend to monitor the new engine and insure the safety of the motor.

Engine builder Chris Schroeder, right, takes offense to a comment concerning horsepower and torque in the new engine. Engine builders are by nature a touchy bunch. Best to steer clear of them.

Crew chief Eric Meade, right, and fabricator extraordinaire Glenn Evans had the 350Z ready for every session.

Mike Cronin reported the car had good power and was able to post some really fast times right away. In the time attack, Mike took 1st Place in the Super Modified RWD class with a blistering lap of 1:41.369!

Mike started the Super Session, a wheel to wheel 5 lap battle, in second place. Every lap he was able to ride the bumper of the Cobb GTR throughout the infield portion of the track, but could not make the pass on the oval. Being down 300 horsepower to the Cobb GTR made it tough! The trusty Fontana Nissan GTR once again performed flawlessly. Mike was able to post a great time of 1:42.738 in Sunday’s Time Attack, good enough for a 2nd Place finish in Modified AWD!

Kerryann De La Cruz took her Nissan Race Shop.com R32 out for it’s first track experience.

Scott Vanderheide, performance parts guy at the Nissan Race Shop.com wants to find out who installed the steering wheel on the wrong side of the R32. It’s ok Scott, we will find the culprit.

Overall, it was a great weekend with fantastic warm windy weather, fast cars, lots of Nissans both on and off the track, and a 1st and 2nd place finish!! Can’t ask for much more than that.

Redline Time Attack Spring Mountain

Well, unfortunately Fontana Nissan Racing did not go to this event. Reality once again reared its ugly head. Work commitments compounded by an unfinished new engine for the 350Z led to the decision to skip this one.

But, that did not mean that Fontana Nissan was not well represented at the event! Scott ran the display for the Nissan Race Shop with the help of the lovely Kerryann. Thanks to all who stopped by!

Paladin brought out a whole slew of Nissans to challenge the desert course at Spring Mountain.

Paul Dentice took the AE Performance 370Z through its paces.

Las Vegas local Whitney Edmister was sporting new graphics on his GT-R.

Redline Grid Guy Zee Reid took a rare opportunity to run his Nissan at the always popular track. Looking good Zee!

The always fast Brian Lock won the exciting Super Session race in his ultra fast GT-R on Sunday.

It was good to see Carl Rydquist back in action in the 350Z.

Scott VanderHeide and the Nissan Race Shop.com display hit the road this past Labor Day Weekend to display at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

The new website www.nissanraceshop.com is up and running. Yeah!! Go on over and check it out. Give Scott any feedback you may have about the site. He responds well to feedback.

The crowd was enthusiastic at the Import Drag Race but the sun was equally enthusiastic, cranking the temps to around 107 degrees. Out of morbid curiosity we measured the asphalt temp right outside the tent. A wilting 157 degrees. Okay, enough of the summer, give me the pouring rain and freezing temps already.

Scott clearly demonstrates heat stroke and it’s ugly after effects. Poor Michelle Farias, Miss Redline Fontana.

Luckily, Michelle helped draw people to the Nissan Race Shop booth since Scott was busy inputting more cool aftermarket parts to the new site. Thanks Michelle!!

Fontana Nissan Racing took the Nissan 350Z to the SpoCom 2010 show at the Long Beach Convention Center to support Redline Time Attack in their booth.

The Fontana Nissan GT-R was displayed in the Synapse Engineering display. Both cars attracted lots of attention from the show visitors.

Miss Redline Chicago, Cailin was there to sign her posters, along with Novella, Miss Redline 2010 and Michelle, Miss Redline Buttonwillow. The line to get your signed poster was always a long one!

Next up, the Famous Fontana Nissan Meet, August 1st from 9am – 1pm at the Fontana Nissan dealership. Both cars and the transporter will be on display, along with the Redline Time Attack trailer, Der Weinershnitsle trailer, girls girls girls, cool aftermarket parts, vendors, vendors, vendors, and much more.

A Hot Time at the RTA Liberty Grand Prix!

As to be expected, the temperature at Willow Springs Raceway in July is HOT. But the air temp was not the only thing hot at the Redline Time Attack Round 6 Liberty Grand Prix. Great time attack action, plenty of girls, a spicy Indian food vendor, and a great fireworks show all added heat to a fun weekend!

Once again, Fontana Nissan was host to a gaggle of Nissan GT-R’s attending the Friday test and tune day. Always good to see all of the guys enjoying their cars!!

The Fontana Nissan 350Z ran strong all day on Friday, posting very quick times considering the heat. Naoto from Sakata Motorsport Electronics was working his computer magic on the ECU.

Mr. Cronin brought out his Ferrari to have a bit of fun. It is always nice to have such a sexy,beautiful thing under the awning! The car, not Mr. Cronin.

Since school is out for the summer the entire Cronin family was able to attend and enjoy the action.

Always reliable, the GT-R posted some quick times Friday and Saturday. Sunday during the morning record assault time attack, Mike suddenly had half the boost he was supposed to have. The crew was able to reset the ECU and Mike was good to go for the afternoon time attack. By then, the track temps had risen considerably and everyone’s times were much slower. Mike settled for 5th place in the Modified AWD class.

In addition to the Fireworks show Saturday night, Redline hosted run-what-you-brung drag racing! 1000 ft course with a tree and timing slips proved irresistible to many of the time attack drivers, including Mike Jr. and Mike Sr. The GT-R with Mike Jr at the wheel lined up against Dez Ballard and his radical Mini Cooper. Dez smoked the tires and Mike was long gone!

Mike Sr lined up against a fellow Ferrari and had a great time. Over and over. And over again!

Unfortunately, Saturday morning saw the 350Z break a cam shaft, ending the weekend. The crew is currently working on the motor and the car will be ready for the Spring Mountain event in September.

Parts guru Scott Vanderheide and his lady Kerryann tried to keep cool under the awning, but by Sunday afternoon it was all but impossible unless you sat in the drink cooler.

Or had an umbrella.

Mikey and Dad still had fireworks in their eyes after the big show!

The next Redline Time Attack will be at Spring Mountain Motorsports Country Club in lovely Pahrump Nevada, September 18th and 19th. See you there!

Mascot Mania!

This past weekend Fontana Nissan Racing displayed the Nissan 350Z at the Lancaster Jet Hawks baseball games, promoting the upcoming Redline Time Attack event at Willow Springs International Raceway.

The car was a crowd favorite, especially with the little kids and Mascots! KaBoom, Stealth, and McGruff all took a turn at the wheel of the 350Z, much to the delight of the crowd.

The High Desert Broadcasting Hotties from 93.5 The Quake stopped by to hand out flyers and chat with the crowd.

The car generated a lot of interest in the Liberty Grand Prix with the local crowd. Make sure to get your tickets early online to receive your free Redline T-shirt!! Stop by our paddock, check out the Fontana Nissan Racing GT-R and 350Z and get Mike’s autograph!

The GT-R Smile

It never fails to happen. When Mike Cronin gives anyone a ride around the track in the Fontana Nissan GT-R, the result is the biggest, widest smile ever.

Fontana Nissan and Mike Cronin were happy to support Redline Time Attack by bringing out the GT-R to Willow Springs for the Media Day. All of the local press and radio people were invited to come out to the track and get a taste of what Redline is all about. Both Mike Cronin and the GT-R and Dez Ballard and his wild Mini were kept busy giving everyone rides around Big Willow.

Emmitt from High Desert Broadcasting was a bit hesitant to belt into the GT-R. After watching just about everyone else have a great time, he took the plunge. Needless to say, he is wearing the patented GT-R smile!

All the folks from The Edge 100.1 fm are ready to buy a GT-R!

The Media Day was held to inform everyone about the upcoming Liberty Grand Prix. Redline is going all out on this event, with a huge fireworks show Saturday night, Circuit Battles between evenly matched Redline competitors (including Mike Cronin!), Drag Racing on the 1000 foot drag strip, and of course the Time Attack on Sunday. As the local radio ad says “If you have plans for the Fourth of July weekend, BLOW THEM OFF and come out to Willow Springs for the Redline Time Attack Liberty Grand Prix!!!”

What has 100+ Fast Cars and 2,600+ Explosions?

The Liberty Grand Prix Redline Time Attack Event at Willow Springs International Raceway of course!!

In addition to watching the Fontana Nissan Racing Nissan 350Z and Nissan GTR attack the clock, spectators at the Liberty Grand Prix will be treated to the largest fireworks show in the Antelope Valley on Saturday night, July 3rd. This show is bigger than the Lancaster city sponsored show the following night. Bring your welding goggles and earplugs!

The hugely popular Redline Model Search Contest will be taking the stage on Sunday, with girls from all over competing for the chance to be Miss Redline 2011. The winner from the Auto Club Speedway event will be present, along with Novella, Miss Redline 2010, to conduct the interviews and M.C. the contest.

For the first time in 2010, Redline is bringing back the wildly popular Circuit Battles! If you don’t know, a Circuit Battle is an informal, bragging rights only, head to head battle between 2 competitors. Both cars start their first hot lap about 100 yards apart, switch positions during the cool down lap, and do one more hot lap. Best combined time wins. I’m sure Mike will be out to establish dominance in the Fontana Nissan cars! Trash talking has already begun on Facebook and the forums!

Into Drag Racing??? Bring your hot rod out to this event and be prepared. 1000 foot track with tree and timing slips!! Anyone can enter, with drags starting at 6pm until 9pm. Willow Springs has been running Wednesday evening drags for awhile now and drawing a bunch of competitors. The drags will be conducted on the front straight which allows for optimum viewing from the grandstands. Who knows, maybe the Fontana Nissan Racing GT-R might have to make it’s drag racing debut!!

1st and 3rd at RTA Auto Club Speedway!!

Fontana Nissan Racing attended the Redline Time Attack event at the Auto Club Speedway over the Memorial Day weekend, scoring 1st place in Super Modified RWD in the 350Z and 3rd place in the Modified AWD!

The 350Z made its 2010 debut at this event after suffering an engine problem at Auto Club last November. The engine was rebuilt and ran very strongly all weekend. The power steering servo failed on Saturday, forcing Mike to drive the Time Attack without power steering. He started Sunday with the upper body of Mick Jagger but ended up with the upper body of the Incredible Hulk! Hanging on at 173 mph around the banking was a bit of a challenge! Mike’s time of 1:43.202 was good for 1st place in the Super Modified RWD class and was also the 3rd fastest lap run by anyone in the Time Attack!

The Fontana Nissan GT-R ran flawlessly all weekend. The GT-R was updated with an OS Giken limited slip differential to achieve better handling and take the loads off of the front drive clutch, thereby reducing the temps. Mike ran a 1:46.369, good for a podium 3rd place finish.

Fontana Nissan was host to 12 Nissan GT-R’s from the NAGTROC organization. They made quite the impressive display, with most of them running the Saturday Test and Tune Day and a few running in the Time Attack on Sunday. Thanks to all of them for coming out and supporting Redline!

Scott Vanderheide, Parts Guru, was on hand with the display of parts from Fontana Nissan.

Gin from Sakata Motorsport Electronics not only worked for the team but ran his own car as well! Go Gin!

Mr. Cronin took his Ferrari 430 out for a spin. We were wiping the drool off of it all weekend.

Old friend Stu Hayner is now working as the Chief Driving Instructor at Redline Time Attack. If you want the opportunity of a lifetime for free instruction from one of the best drivers in the world, bring your car out and join the novice group. You will learn, improve, and have a wonderful time while doing it. School was never this fun!

All in all, it was a very successful event for the Fontana Nissan Racing team. It was good to have the 350Z back in action! We will be attending the Liberty Grand Prix, July 2nd through 4th at Willow Springs International Raceway. Redline is really going all out to make this event very special, with drag racing, wheel to wheel racing, girls, fast cars, and best of all the biggest fireworks show in the Antelope Valley. 22 glorious minutes long Saturday night, don’t even think about missing this!

Sin City+GTR+RTA=Gr8 Fun!!

Fontana Nissan Racing headed out to the Round 3 of the 2010 Redline Time Attack Series on April 22nd. Friday was an all day test-and –tune day, giving everyone a chance to get to know the outside road course at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The weather went from snow, hail, rain, and wind on Thursday to an absolutely picture postcard day Friday. Yeah!!

Mike took the GTR out, familiarized himself with the new configuration of the track, and proceeded to demo/instruct/wow/etc., anyone who dared strap into the Fontana Nissan GTR with him.

The NAGTROC contingent was well represented with many GTR’s in attendance.

Saturday dawned with even nicer weather, warming up into the low 80’s. Mike took the GTR out and fined tuned a bit to prepare for the Time Attack on Sunday. Most of the NAGTROC folks ran on Saturday as well, making an impressive display of GTR’s all on the track at the same time.

Nissan is well represented among the people who run Time Attack with 350Z’s, 370Z’s, GTR’s, and even a Sentra SeR entered at Las Vegas.

Ethan Boyles in his Nissan GTR came all the way from Washington state to compete!

Trey Cobb is always in the running in his Nissan 370Z.

Mike put together some impressive laps, taking 3rd place in Modified AWD class with a time of 1:44.860.

Redline brought in the Sony PS3 trailer to keep all the young and young-at-heart racers driving constantly. A very popular place!

A great time was had by all and we are looking forward to our home race at Auto Club Speedway, May 29-30th. Come on out and see Mike and the GTR and 350Z!

GT-R Shake Down Time!

Fontana Nissan Racing brought out the Nissan GT-R for a preseason shake down at the Streets of Willow last Friday. Redline Time Attack put on the event as an opportunity for teams to get the cob webs out and get ready for Round One at Buttonwillow on March 26th. Mike took the car through it’s paces, recording the fastest laps of the day.

For those people planning ahead, the Redline Time Attack website has tickets on sale for the Buttonwillow event already. It is shaping up to be not only a great racing weekend, but an “EVENT” as well! The very cool band Breakestra (check them out on YouTube) will be playing Saturday night, there will be a Battle of the Bands going on during the day Saturday and Sunday, as well as the first round of the Miss Redline 2011 Model Search. Fontana Nissan Racing attended the Redline Time Attack Customer Appreciation Day at the Street of Willow last Friday. Middle of December with the sun shining, 72 degrees, no wind (a miracle!), good cars, good people, good food. What more could you want!

Mike Cronin took the GTR out for a few fast laps around the circuit before giving rides to some other lucky drivers.

A good variety of old and new Nissans and even a Datsun 510 were in attendance.

The NAGTROC group was well represented by Kunani, Soccer Dad and Greg S with their fine Nissan GTRs.

Professional driver Stu Hayner was providing world class driving instruction for all comers, novice and veteran alike, at no charge.

All in all, a great time was had by all. Thanks to Redline Time Attack for the hamburger barbeque lunch and a fun time!

The Fontana Nissan Meet was a large success, thanks to all of the hearty folks who braved the rain and cold to come out and participate in the first of many Meets. Many, many beautiful Nissan cars and trucks were brought over and displayed. Fontana Nissan Racing displayed the 350Z Redline Unlimited Class racecar as well as the Redline Modified Class GTR.

The truck owners were the only guys happy about the rain! I’m sure they didn’t have to go far to find some mud to play in after the Meet.

AAA+ Fun at RTA Auto Club Speedway!

Fontana Nissan Racing hit the road early on Friday, November 13th, destination Auto Club Speedway in Fontana California. This is our home track so lots of preparations were in order to accommodate the large list of invited guests.

Fontana Nissan brought out five beautiful cars for the spectators to check out.

Scott Vanderheide from Fontana Nissan Parts was there to answer all questions and show off his fantastic line of performance parts.

The Fontana Nissan Racing 350Z and GTR were unloaded right before the rain started coming down. Fortunately, that was the only rain we saw all weekend. Beautiful sunshine and moderate temps were the order of the weekend.

A large contingent of NAGTROC (North American GTR Owners Club) folks turned out with their beautiful GTS’s for a little track fun, burgers, and friendship. Many thanks to all the GTR people for coming out and supporting Fontana Nissan Racing!

The Fontana Nissan 350Z took to the track with some scorching fast times all day Saturday. During the Sunday morning practice session something let go in the engine and the day was done. More on that in the Tech Corner when we find out what happened.

The Fontana Nissan GTR showed up at Auto Club Speedway sporting lots of new improvements. Synapse Engineering downpipes and intake plumbing, Mode Racing engine oil cooler and sway bars, and a custom Fontana Nissan Racing rear mounted trans oil cooler all added up to one fast GTR. Mike was the fastest GTR in the Modified AWD class with a blazing lap of 1:44.733 in the Time Attack session. That time held up for 2nd overall in Modified AWD.

Professional race car driver Stu Hayner was on hand to instruct the GTR drivers from NAGTROC as well as take Mr. Cronin’s Ferrari 430 out for some exercise.

All in all it was a great Redline Time Attack weekend, full of Nissan fans, incredible cars, great drivers and plenty of So Cal sunshine. Can’t wait for the 2010 Redline Time Attack season to begin!!

Redline Time Attack Final Event Coming Up!

Don’t miss the last chance this year to attend and/or participate in the Redline Time Attack. Auto Club Speedway in Fontana will host Round 8, the season finale, November 14th and 15th.

Great Cars + Great People = Great Day!!

Fontana Nissan Racing travelled to the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch to attend the NAGTROC – Top Gear day at the track. Top Gear sent Fly the photographer to the track from England to shoot pics for an upcoming article about the Nissan GTR.

Doug at Switchcars, located at the Spring Mountain track, did a great job organizing the day. The attendees all enjoyed a delicious lunch and a party afterwards that was successful enough that no pictures have surfaced from that yet!

For GTR lovers, this was the ultimate. About 20 GTR’s were driven or trailered to the track from as far away as Chicago. The weather was perfect – sunny, warm, but not too warm. Plenty of track time was available to wear out the cars and the drivers!

Fontana Nissan Racing brought out our Redline Time Attack Modified AWD Class GTR with some new mods (more on those in the next post) and the 350Z race car. We also delivered Darin Ferraro’s GTR with a completely repaired transmission to a very happy owner!

Scott from Fontana Nissan Parts was on hand to answer any and all questions concerning the aftermarket parts on the GTR. Several industry people from Cobb Tuning, and HB Speed, and Aeromotions were on hand to help customers as well.

It was great to be able to put a face with so many names and meet such a nice group of people. Thanks to everyone involved !

It’s Endless!

Fontana Nissan Racing Tests Endless Brake Pads

At the recent Red Line Time Attack event on September 26th-27th Fontana Nissan Racing tested Endless brake pads. The Unlimited Class 350Z was fitted with a new set of N35S compound pads. Prior to this test we have used PFC 01 compound pads. The brakes are Alcon Rolex GT spec calipers on Alcon rotors. The brake package on this car has always performed extremely well. We were looking for the Endless pads to perform equally or better in all aspects. We evaluated initial “bite” on application modulation through the brake zone and release at the end of the braking cycle. Pad wear and rotor wear were also judged. The Endless pads performed flawlessly in all respects. The amount of track time was somewhat limited so wear is difficult to judge but it appears the wear factors are better than on previous pads.

On the GTR we have been running the stock pads. With stock pads the brakes go hard and become ineffective after just a few hard driven laps. Up until they go hard the braking is quite good on the GTR. We installed ME20 compound pads on the car. These pads are designed as a good trackable street pad. After installing the pads, Mike Cronin experienced no hard pedal issues and had good consistent braking throughout the run. We also noted that the pads remained quiet and had good bite when cold.

Overall, we were impressed and happy with the Endless pads on both cars and will continue to evaluate the performance and wear at the upcoming Red Line Time Attack event at Auto Club Speedway on November 14th-15th.

Pahrump!! RTA Round 7 @ Spring Mountain

On Friday, September 25th the Fontana Nissan Racing team headed to Pahrump Nevada to attend the RTA Round 7 at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch.

After a very early yet uneventful drive, the team spent Friday afternoon setting up the big top in the paddock area. The 100+ degree temperatures were an indication of the expected weather for the entire weekend. Break out the SPF 100!!

Practice went smoothly Saturday, with the 350Z running the best it had run all year. We had good balance on the Yokohama tires and the new Endless pads came in nicely. We are still amazed at how much more down force we are getting from the new louvered hood.

The GTR went well in practice running in the 2:32 range. The GTR now sports a custom roll bar and much more driver friendly Sparco seats and belts.

Mike ran a few laps in the vintage racing Firebird, doing 300 foot long burn outs coming out of Spring Mountain’s tight corners. This spectacular car is always a fan favorite where ever it goes.

Sunday running the 350Z we continued to tune for the new tires. We were able to run a 2:22.90 in the heat of the day, a whopping 10 second improvement over the previous RTA track record. The turbo cars were able to turn up the boost and set some really fantastic times. We continue to be the fastest naturally aspirated car in Red Line and probably the fastest 350Z in the country.

The GTR ran well but continued to have some heat issues that the 100+ degree heat certainly did not help. Mike gets the GTR around awfully quickly and we continue to be the fastest and least modified GTR.

After all was said and done the Fontana Nissan 350Z finished 2nd in Unlimited Rear Wheel Drive and the GTR finished 5th in Modified All Wheel Drive.

Next up will be some more minor tweeks to the 350Z and we will be off to RTA Round 8 in November at the Auto Club Speedway. The big horsepower turbo cars are certainly going to put on a show at the Auto Club Speedway. We will be showing what an N/A 350Z is capable of. Make sure to mark your calendars for RTA Round 8 November 14th and 15th. It will be a great event and we look forward to meeting everyone!!

Nissan has taken the wraps off of the new all electric zero emissions Leaf.

Nissan states that the car will handle and accelerate like a V6 with a top speed of 90 mph. Typical daily driving will get you 100 mile range. Should be in some dealer showrooms by late 2010 and nationwide by 2012.

Interestingly, Red Line Time Attack has expressed interest in adding an alternative fuel class to the line up. Hmmmm. I can see where this is going!

Getting Rid of Nissan GTR High Temps and Trans Failures

As many of you know, in addition to running the 350Z in the Unlimited Class in Red Line Time Attack we also have run a GTR in the Modified Class. One of the reasons that we are running the GTR is to incrementally make improvements to the GTR that will make it a better track day car.

We also have in the shop a GTR that has run several track days and has many performance modifications. This car has a broken transmission that we are repairing using parts from other broken transmissions.

When we have run the GTR in RTA Mike has had to cut his sessions short because he is getting high temperature warnings. We decided to be proactive and address these temperature issues before they become a bigger problem. We are installing Willall Racing cooler kits on the transmission and both differentials. We are also installing the Willall extended engine oil pan.

The following photos show all four kits as we received them from Willall. The kits seem complete and well thought out.

Fontana Nissan Racing was invited by Red Line Time Attack to display the Fontana Nissan 350Z at the SpoCom 2009 show at the Long Beach Convention Center June 14th. Mike Cronin, along with three other Red Line drivers were there to sign posters for the many fans that turned out. The show featured a very large car show and competition, bikini contest, lingerie show, urban dance contest, and lots of automotive vendors. Red Line Time Attack Spokesmodels Alexia and Novella graced the booth and signed hundreds of posters for the fans. A good time was had by all!

Willow Springs Red Line Time Attack Event

The Fontana Nissan Racing Team made the arduous trip to Willow Springs International Raceway. The trip lasted about five minutes including the three minute delay at the gate. It's good to be racing at the home track again!

After completing the paddock set up on Friday morning the team was ready to start testing the improvements made to both the teams 350Z and the 2009 GTR. Mike first laid down some baseline laps in the GTR. Bone stock with the OE tires he ran a quick 132.1. The first change to evaluate was the new 18" CCW wheels and Nitto NT-01 tires. Bolting on this package with no other changes resulted in a 2.5 second improvement with a time of 129.6. The car still suffered from too much under steer. We took the GTR back over to the shop to change to the JRZ shocks.

We started testing the 350Z and after our engine failure at Buttonwillow were extremely cautious and looking for any detail that would indicate trouble. After a few short runs it was clear that the oil pressure was still marginal. We had a larger capacity oil pump ready so we decided to install that pump to insure the reliability of the engine. After installing the pump the pressures were up but still not as designed. We continued testing the 350Z and achieved a time of 122.9. We had high hopes that during the Time Attack sticker tires and a qualifying effort would result in an expected time of 120.5.

During Round 1 of the Time Attack the tires and handling were way below our expectations. The car was struggling to run a low 125.0. We decided the best thing to do was to run a used set of tires and reset the handling. Mike did a good job and ran a 123.8. Our time was way off of what we had set out to do but we did get a lot of valuable data and the engine survived the weekend. We are confident that with some more testing the car will run the expected mid 1.20 laps.

The GTR ran in Round 1 of the Time Attack and ran a 130.6 with the new JRZ shocks. This performance was also disappointing as we felt we should improve 2 seconds a lap with the better shocks. Mike's input tells us that with some spring changes and a bit of tuning we will get the improvement from the JRZs.

Also during the weekend we ran the Cronin's 1967 Firebird vintage race car. The car had not run in about 10 years. We had some battery issues but did get Mike out in a session and the old bird ran some impressive laps, the best being a 130.3. It is interesting to note that the 1967 car and the 2009 car ran about the same time with two totally different approaches to performance.

The team is now back in the shop working through a long list on all three cars to be ready for the next track session.

Development!!

When a new race car is built, especially a car that no one has raced before, you expect that some development will be required to make the car successful. When we originally built the GT 350Z the unusual circumstances surrounding the Rolex season meant that virtually no development was accomplished during the season.

Testing and development began when we ran the car at Willow Springs Raceway prior to the Red Line Time Attack event at Buttonwillow. During that first run several shortcomings of the car reappeared. The first was stock axles that we had improved enough to be reliable previously in Grand Am GS proved immediately unreliable. Secondly, the new Pirelli tires which we had never run before were definitely different than the Hoosiers the car ran before in Grand Am. The car went well in the test but we decided to change tire sizes to the larger Pirellis that are now allowed in Grand Am.

We arrived at Buttonwillow full of confidence but as soon as we started running we knew things were not quite right. All of Saturday was spent chasing the handling. At the end of the day we found a broken shock. With the shock fixed things were better on Sunday but still not quite right and then the engine blew.

After the weekend we identified the following areas that needed to be improved prior to the next event.

Build new engine / fix oiling problem
Change seat position for better driver comfort
Install new JRZ shocks
Decrease roll
Increase front compression travel
Remove all compliance from suspension
Improve half shafts

We then went to work developing solutions for the known problems.

1. We took a carefull look at the entire oil system. Aviaid built new pumps and we worked with Goodridge to improve the oil plumbing throughout the chassis. Cosworth came on board as a sponsor / technology partner so we built a new 3.8 liter variant of the VQ35 using a Cosworth crank, rods, pistons, bearings, and head gaskets.

2. Moving the seat is fairly straight foward but does require a bit of fabrication as the seat is very solidly mounted.

3. Working with JRZ is easy and they built a custom set of shocks right to our specifications.

4. A thorough study of the suspension revealed a need for stiffer springs. We ordered new Hypercoils front and rear. Additionally the JRZ shocks provide an increase in support from rod pressure. The front anti roll bar diameter was also increased. The bar is driver adjustable over a wide range but we needed more control in the upper end of adjustment.

5. With the new larger tires we had some rubbing issues and not quite enough compression travel. We cut away all the material that rubbed or limited travel and seam welded the newly trimmed areas.

6. Since building the car we knew we needed to remove all rubber from the suspension. We acquired new links for the rear from Megan Racing. We reworked the Megan Racing parts to improve their reliability and we made custom monoball bushing replacements. The front lower control arms were modified to use rod ends to allow additional adjustment to the front suspension.

7. We worked with The Drive Shaft Shop to build custom axles using Lobro 108mm CV joints and 36 spline axles. Nobody else had really addressed the requirements that an endurance car has for drive axles so we had to go down a new path to come up with an acceptable solution.

After spending a few hundred hours in the shop and several days on the dyno we believe we have now completed this phase of development. This weekends testing and Sunday's Red Line Time Attack event will prove our efforts and probably create a new list of things to further develop before the next event.

Fontana Nissan Transporter Tour Part II

Once we get to the track with our fine truck and trailer, the circus begins. Raise the big top!

First step is to unload all of the equipment and cars. We need access to the cart that carries the Kiwi Tile. Kiwi Tile is a fantastic invention consisting of .33 meter squares of a very hard mesh plastic that connect together endlessly. We carry our tile pre-assembled in 3 tile by 5 tile sections on a cart that was fabricated specifically for this application. When the tile is off loaded, the cart becomes our fuel cart. Multi-functionality at its best! The tile is carried section by section into the proper spot and snapped together to form one very large working surface. This surface makes jacking up the car, rolling around on a creeper, and just about every other task much simpler and cleaner. Sometimes we can be paddocked on grass, gravel, or just plain old dirt and the Kiwi Tile makes life wonderful.

Next up is setting up the framework for the transporter awning. The rafter poles hook to the side of the trailer and are connected at the outer ends by poles.

Next comes the actual awning fabric. Ours (and most other race teams) was sewn by Larsen Sails in Santa Cruz California. They used to be a top sail maker for boats but have switched to sewing transporter awnings for teams in every major racing series. The awning consists of a top main awning cover, side curtains for all three sides, and a hospitality area awning. Once the main awning is pulled through the track on the roof of the trailer it is secured to the rafter poles and raised into place. The smaller hospitality awning is then set up in similar fashion. It connects to the main awning. Once the awning is up it is very vulnerable to damage from winds. We carry 1200 pounds of weight to tie to the awning poles, 100 pounds on each pole, plus we tie the whole apparatus to any conveniently located truck, building, car, etc. if available.

This is what the finished set up looks like. The hospitality area is to the right with the half wall privacy panels in place. We can fit and work on up to five cars at the same time. In this instance we displayed three cars for Fontana Nissan and ran the race car out of the fourth and fifth spots. Outside of the awning we use crowd control poles to keep all of the bikes, scooters, and quads neatly organized in one place.

Working on the cars out of the weather and sun makes all the difference. Spectators can easily view the cars and talk to the crew.

The hospitality area is used to entertain guests and sponsors as well as feed the crew. It is a great place to take a break and sit down with a cold drink. We can seat sixteen. We serve three meals a day here instead of going to the snack bar or having to wait in line at Denny's at six in the morning.

A Tour of the Fontana Nissan Race Trailer Part I

So often at the races people will stop by the trailer and ask all sorts of questions like "How do you get the car up there?" or "What's in there?" or "Is that a soft-serve ice cream machine in there?". Just kidding about the last one. Follow me on a brief tour of a very nice race trailer.

The Fontana Nissan Racing trailer was built by the fine folks at High Tech Performance Trailers in Ohio. It is set up to carry one or two cars on the upper deck, with the lower deck set up as a workshop/kitchen/lounge.

A lift gate is used to lift the cars from the ground to the upper deck where they are rolled into the trailer and secured. All sorts of other equipment such as the awning rafter poles, pit equipment, bodywork, etc. are stored here as well. At the track the lift gate is stored out and up high to get it out of the way and allow access to the rear door of the trailer. While traveling the lift gate folds up flat and forms the rear of the trailer.

As you enter the trailer from the awning side you will be in the work area. Stainless steel counter tops, under counter Lista cabinets, large cabinets for spare engine and transmission storage, and upper cabinets for small item storage are here.

This area is designed to carry the shock dyno. We do not currently carry a shock dyno but have seriously considered putting in a soft serve ice cream / margarita machine. We have measured and it will fit. I will keep you updated on that one.

Moving toward the rear of the trailer we come to the most important area, the kitchen! We have a large refrigerator and freezer, microwave, and Lista storage for utensils, pots and pans, BBQ tools, and a nice big pantry for food storage. We serve 3 meals a day out of this kitchen. A well fed team is a happy team!

Opposite the kitchen is the radio cabinet. Depending on the series we are running we may need as many as a dozen radio set-ups. Multiple electrical outlets make it easy to set up chargers for that many radios. Headsets are stored in the upper cabinet.

Next to the radio cabinet are the crew lockers. Everyone needs a place to stash their backpack, cell phone, jackets, hats etc while working at the track and these lockers get a lot of use! The large closets next to the crew area are for the race uniforms and storage for anything tall.

Going back to the front of the trailer, the drivers lounge is located up the stairs on the 5th wheel deck of the trailer. It is set up for drivers to change their clothes, store their drivers gear, and chill out. This area is also used by the engineers to look at data and in-car video of the sessions. Geek-speak can be a requirement up here sometimes.

When traveling the pit equipment such as tire carts, fuel rigs, the BBQ, etc are tied down to the floor tracks down the center isle. Fragile items such as the flat screen TV, vinyl plotter, etc. are stored on the floor of the drivers lounge.

Needless to say the entire trailer is fully air conditioned, has a rocking stereo system, and is a true shop-away-from-home for the team and drivers. Having a trailer like this enables the team to work at peak efficiency and to carry just about everything they will need to cover most situations.

Fontana Nissan Racing Engine Dept. Visits Cosworth

On April 9th Chris Schroeder, my engine builder, and I visited Cosworth in Torrance CA. A few weeks before that my wife and I were spending some time on the coast in central California. During that time we toured Hearst Castle. The tour guide mentioned several times that "it is nice to be a Hearst! ". Well, touring Cosworth I said several times "it is nice to be Cosworth!"

When we arrived we waited at the reception area for about 15 minutes. Apparently Eric Hsu is a very busy guy as he is as hard to see in person as he is to get on the phone. When Eric finally appeared he escorted us to the conference room and then went off to find Ken Anderson. Both Chris and I have considerable experience with Cosworth produced engines so the 10 minutes we waited for Eric and Ken was well spent perusing the display engines that ring the conference room. I love history and museums so looking at those 20 or so engines would have been worth an admission price.

When Ken and Eric returned they were carrying the sample internal components of their new 3.8 liter VQ kit. These pieces were pure automotive art. It is clear that when Cosworth decides to do a project they produce parts that are simply the best in existance.

Chris and I studied the parts, asked a few questions, and both knew right away that using Cosworth components was in our immediate future. We spent a few more minutes discussing the business side of things. It is interesting to note how much Cosworth has embraced the Time Attack model as a place to showcase and sell their performance line of parts.

Ken had a meeting so Eric gave us a tour of the facility. As I said before, it is nice to be Cosworth. The 23,500 sq ft. facility contains everything a proper engine shop should contain. In fact, it contains several of everything a proper engine shop should contain. During the tour it became obvious that the resources that Cosworth has and the experience that Cosworth has enable them to simply be the "best".

It will be strange to be using a "kit" from a supplier. I have not built an engine in years that did not contain parts, especially pistons, of our own design.

We finished our tour, asked a few more questions that would be answered by the "UK", and left the facility a little starstruck by our experience. We then set off to meet with Jason from Mine's to start on the GTR project. More on that later.

The 2009 Nissan Cube is Here and it's Cool!!

For the Buttonwillow Redline Time Attack Event, Fontana Nissan sent up a new, not yet available, Cube. The dealership will be receiving their inventory in late April. Many fans were able to see, touch, and sit in the Cube. If you are tired of driving a car with zero styling, this car is for you. Nissan calls this the "bulldog in sunglasses" look. What a cool car.

The Cube will start at $13, 990 msrp. It features a "water theme" throughout, with concentric circles radiating out from the headliner, flowing curves and oblong vents and a beautiful dashboard. The Rockford-Fosgate sound system rocks, and Bluetooth, XM Radio, iPod Interface, and Intelligent Key/Pushbutton Start complete the tech savvy features. The car has a roomy cargo area and seats 5.

The Cube is powered by a 1.8 liter inline 4 producing 122 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. Order it with either a manual transmission or the CVT. Mileage estimates are 27 city and 33 highway.

I think the racing team needs a Cube crew transporter!
